I was able to gather than the shooter was a Yiannapolis fan, who acted in self defense. But as you say, the reports are contradictory. However, with all the other attacks you describe, I feel this has the ring of truth.

A more dramatic example of losing to win is how Vo Nguyen Giap conducted the Vietname War on behalf of his government. He never won a battle against the US, yet he was able to wear the US down. It got to the point that when an American officer bitterly told an NVA colonel that the US never lost a battle, the Colonel replied: "That is irrelevant".

When they left, he ended up running over South Vietnam.

Near me in Greensboro, there's a Revolutionary War battleground where Cornwallis defeated General Nathanael Greene (for whom the city is named). He had just been defeated at Cowan's Ford (very near where I live) and had moved there in what he called "strategic retreat," where they would fight the British forces and keep retreating to the Dan River. So all of those battles were victories for Cornwallis.

So after the battle at Greensboro, when Cornwallis was reviewing the battle and debriefing his commanders, he said, "A few more victories like that and we'll have to surrender!"
