Something that I have grown to believe is more and more bogus is America's obsession over DUIs. MADD, the chief driving force behind it, has become just another money making lobbyist group that others on this board have bemoaned. They rely mostly on emotional appeal, and it is quite easy to demonize this kind of crime. However, here are a few reasons why I think it is bogus
1. The .08 driving limit in the US is certainly bogus. Most studies have shown that drunk drivers involved in auto accidents are in the .15-.2 range.
2. A study done by Clemson University, and repeated elsewhere, has shown that the standard "Field Sobriety Test" is a poor indicator of showing how drunk someone is. In short, officers were asked to perform tests on various subjects and then determine which were intoxicated or not. The officers said about half were drunk. The catch? Everyone of the subjects were sober.
3. DUIs have turned into a moneymaking scheme for the state. With states cutting budgets, police around the country are specifically targeting drunk drivers because they bring in the most money. Convictions and fines are quick and easy money. Nevermind situations like in Oregon where state troopers were being offered $100 bonuses per drunk driving conviction.
