Title: FaceBook a threat to future jobs?
Post by: Travis Retriever on January 18, 2010, 02:51:24 PM
According to my mom, any of our friends can, with a cell phone camera put stupid stuff we do on the internet (referring to the people in the teens), and this can be a threat to a future job, as any employer can just look it up.
She noted that people have been fired because they said something stupid, their employer found it, and gave the person the pink slip.
Is this overblown, or is it something worth getting worked up about?

I did hear bits and pieces about that in the news. Apparently there are some firms that rely on those kinds of tactics. The idea is understandable to a point.
In my opinion your boss at wok is supposed to know shits about your private life as long as you do your job proffesionaly.

Penn and Teller's BS episode about manners covered a lot of those.  Shows a lot of people who got burned for stuff they did in their own private life.  It's not just facebook.  It's a problem all over.

Well that sucks. :\
Granted, I doubt us being a corporatist system helps.
Remember when we were freer, right after the civil war?
How, despite the huge social stigma with being African American, that they were able to get hired by working for less, and even start their own businesses?
Kinda hard to do that these days via government barriers to entry.

Yes.
As for your second point, I have no idea. :\

I'm also waiting for Shane's input.
He's an employer, so it would be nice to get that side of the story too.

Personally, I don't care as long as you do good work. Although my current business has no employees. But if it's in your private life and doesn't affect your work at all, then who cares?

Well, since the law it self prevents people from dressing and acting the way they want, even when it doesn't hurt anyone, would it be surprising if employers did the same thing? Referring to Shane's video on "Whites only" transport:

Also, try going to court in a skirt and see how "blind" Lady Justice really is  ::)

QuoteFourth, the widespread use of state power erodes private morality, as people learn from the state's actions and rationalizations that it is acceptable to use force against others to achieve your goals. Unfortunately, the state and its politicians—corrupt, mendacious, rapacious, lascivious, and ruthless—have become the great moral teachers of our time.

So it seems, they do set a pretty bad example.

My own employer once tried to get on my case about my having long hair.  Hasn't brought it up since as there's no real case for it.  There's no regulations forbiding it and the place I work at employs at least two other guys with long hair so, that's that.

But cripes, what is the bloody deal?  I'm no slob.  My hair is kept clean and groomed.  ><

I just make sure my Facebook is private. I don't have a rambunctious private/social life so it's not much of a worry to me anyway, but if any potential employer of mine did find private info about me and tried to use it against me, I wouldn't take it sitting down.
