Actually, self-driving cars have been in development and testing for about 50 years, starting back in the heyday of SAIL. They had a van with an extra 4-cylinder engine installed in the back to drive the generator that powered the PDP-11 they also put in. (A PDP-11 was about as good as it got for installing in a vehicle in those days, before microprocessors. It's main advantages were it could be put inside the back of a van, something not usually feasible for 1960's computers of useful power, and the unusual design of the expansion bus allowed a large number of external interfaces with a simple interrupt priority to be added to it, just the kind of thing needed.) It never got beyond a test track, but being able to get a 1960's era PDP-11 to operate a vehicle AT ALL was pretty good.
