As someone with a Master's in Software Engineering I really wonder if anyone needs a college degree to prove they know anything about Software Engineering.

In fact, if you want to get into coding, start working on an OS project in whatever area you're interested in.  If you're any good, you'll soon get contacted.  If you don't, and you think you're any good, you have a portfolio.
