Title: If the Confederacy Won the Civil War
Post by: Skm1091 on June 26, 2014, 04:38:19 PM
I always wondered about this. What do you think would have happened if the south won?

Hard to say. We would have been two countries, so it's kind of doubtful we would have grown into the monstrosity that manipulated the end of WWI, set the stage for WWII, engaged in a cold war, and ended up with the huge, out-of-control government we have today.

Contrary to what the non-thinking Lincoln-worshippers assert, there is NO WAY slavery would have lasted until today. The Confederacy had even fewer resources than the Union did, add in the lost infrastructure from all the battles and they couldn't have kept slavery going no matter how many laws they passed.

The South might have industrialized faster than it did since the North would have had to compete on equal footing with other countries absent the protectionism.

But, of course, there might well have been other wars, other tyrants, other things that happen to reverse whatever good might have been done. Who can say?

I would tell people that even if the south won that slavery would certainly have faded eventually. Remember the last country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery was not the United States, it was Brazil in 1888

Also, we probably would never have known about Jesse James and his gang, since they were former Confederate guerrillas who were essentially continuing the fight. If the Confederates one, there likely wouldn't have been a need for such actions.

Yep, same with the KKK.

Slavery is phased out in favor of a Jim Crow style system

The US and CSA have their own "Cold War" over influence in Latin America. The next war is likely a 3 way clusterfuck between the USA, CSA, and Spain over Cuba.

The Panama Canal is either never built or significantly delayed because involvement in Panama would lead to another war.

So in other words, things would be shit no matter who won.

It appears it might be somewhat better if the South won, but of course we don't know what other crap that would have spawned. Overall, though, I don't think two smaller countries could do anywhere near the damage of one big country.

Reminds me of Mary J Ruwart's response to the "If we have the entire world united as a single nation, we can end all war and bring about world peace!" stuff.  Methinks the folks hawking such an idea (one world nation) are a wee bit...misled.

Then there's Leslie Fish's cautionary tale.

If the entire world was united as a single nation, there would, by definition, be no war. So in that sense they're right. Doesn't mean there isn't violence, doesn't mean there isn't insurrection, doesn't mean...

Anyway, back to the game:

Slavery is abolished by President Davis in 1866.
African-Confederates are granted full citizenship in 1867.
The Republic of California invades the Utah Territory in 1888, executing Brigham Young.
The Republic of California invades the United States in 1890, Theodore Roosevelt dies defending Chicago.
The CSA allies with the remainder of the USA 1890 to repel the socialist invasion from the west.
Panama canal gets built by Columbia, the most powerful nation in the hemisphere.
