When the Tony Blair in the UK banned all non-government handguns, a reporter did ask about knives, and the response was to the effect that knife registration sounded like a good idea. Keep in mind this was the same bunch that had difficulty understanding why there were objections when they decided that the appropriate level of proof for convicting someone of terrorism was that the police accused them.

And that handgun ban failed. After the ban in 1997 the homicide rate jumped (look at page 32 from source bellow)

This is the wonderful data table that shows all categories of violent crime in the US falling be approximately half between 1992 and 2011. Always a good thing to have on hand when flattening a gun thief.
Canada used to publish similar data, but the most recent I can find is from 1997, and that particular series was terminated at that point.
2012 was noted as having the lowest rate of reported crime in Canada since 1972, and that the rate has been decreasing since 1991.
Of note, while many people THINK it's safer in Canada, the statistics show that the violent crime rate is about three times higher in Canada than in the US, and the rate in the UK is about four times what it is in the US. I'm far less concerned about having my property damaged or stolen than being the victim of violence. Replacing stolen property is just money. Being beaten up can be permanently crippling or even fatal.
