Title: Video Game Music thread
Post by: AnCap Dave on February 13, 2014, 09:28:09 AM
I know there are a bunch of gamers on this forum, and if you're a gamer, chances are there are songs from video games that you enjoy. Post them in this thread. For the sake of not having massive posts with 10 billion songs, try to keep it to one song per post.

I'll start with a little gem from the Sega Master System, but first a bit of history.

Japan would release a game for the Sega Master System based on the popular anime, Fist of the North Star. When they decided to send this game out globally, they completely changed the character sprites, backgrounds, and even soundtrack so that it no longer resembled Fist of the North Star. They would release the game under the name of Black Belt.

Strangely enough, Black Belt would end up having the better boss theme than the original Japanese game had.

The music in the Earthbound series is pure win, especially the first one.

I want that song played at my wedding (should I have one).

I always get a huge nostalgia boner when I listen to that song. As for me, I love the music of Grant Kirkhope. Here's one of my favorite songs from him.

"I am a shadow, the true self!  I will give you the truth that you claim to hold so dear.  The inescapable fact of your death here!"

Damn awesome game.  Play it or watch the animated series.

Super Puzzle Platformer Deluxe has one of the best soundtracks to any game I've played in recent years.

LEMMINGS!!!

Fuck yeah Lemmings!

While it may be true that the original Lemmings relied a lot on public domain songs for its soundtrack, most of the original songs were pretty good too.

I LOVE the Sega Genesis version of this particular track:

I know I might be kind of spammy at this point posting all these VGMs, but there's just SO many great ones to post...like Ristar!

I am a huge fan of Nobuo Uematsu.  There are too many of his to list but there is one that is by far my favorite.  No, it's not One-Winged Angel (even though the use of real voices and orchestra was groundbreaking at the time).  Dancing Mad for Final Fantasy 6 had an even bigger impact.  After I beat the game, I went back to the final battle and waited in the magic menu just to listen to it.  It is so great.  You can tell the composer was really having fun with it and giving it his all.  It is even better on a real concert organ.

When you're trying to make a game in the style of a Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Western, it helps to have Ennio Morricone actually take part in composing the soundtrack.

OK, about time someone posted this. seriously, it's awesome music--especially for the 90's:

[yt]4D3XeWPM6Fw[/yt]

it's why Mordin Solus from the ME series is such a favorite squadmate to me: I can take him to fights and feel like Earthworm Jim is with me--if Earthworm Jim was actually intelligent and on speed (and going Shatner).

Reviving this thread because more video game music. Been recently looking at the works of Tim Follin and god damn was this guy a genius. He did the music for games like Solstice and Silver Surfer for the NES. Say what you will about Silver Surfer, but anyone who says that game didn't have some of the best fucking music on the NES is a god damned liar.

having played the Silver Surfer (and been owned), I have to agree.

(fun fact: it was never played to be won: only to see how long one could last. It's more fun that way)

Journey to Silius has, arguably, one of the best soundtracks in the entire NES library. SO god damned good.

The more I listen to Tim Follin's works, the more I'm convinced he is the undisputed king of video game music. This dude could do more with limited technology and sound chips than most pop artists can do today with their major studios.

For the longest time, I thought Nobuo Uematsu was overrated as a composer because too many people wouldn't stop going on about how amazing One Winged Angel was. Well, while I still think that piece is overrated, I definitely see why Nobuo Uematsu gets his praise. Dancing Mad, the final boss theme of Final Fantasy VI is definitely a masterpiece.

Here's one from the past: Hardball! on the Commodore 64:

[yt]SO04IJ8K1Q0[/yt]

I was reminded of this recently when we were (re-re-re-re-re-)watching The Princess Bride, because this is the game that the grandson is playing at the beginning. I remember recognizing it instantly when I saw it in the theatre, but was incredibly disappointed at the sucky music since the one in the actual game was so much better!
