Title: Canon and Copyright
Post by: tnu on December 22, 2013, 11:50:56 AM
Having been a follower of the Star Wars Expanded Universe and its canon for years I've become a fan of works that have massive sprawling continuities that span multiple mediums th at all form a cohesive canon and universzse. I've always thought or felt that there was a sort of measure as to what was and was not canon. Within these universes that was determined by official sources as separate from Fanon but in recent times i'm finding it difficulte to reconcile this with my views on intellectual property and the reality of the problems that IP creates. What are you guys thoughts?

Actually, it's two separate things.

In most fan communities, that which comes from the creator (what or who ever that may be) is cannon. Everything else is fan fiction.

IP, if used as it's advovates intend, stops there from being fan fiction.

That's good to know because I love a good Canon in my fiction just got worried there was some dissonance in my thinking.
