Title: Talking Politics with loved ones.
Post by: tnu on December 21, 2012, 10:16:06 PM
I was just wondering  if anybody else had trouble with this. I find it exceedingly difficult to talk politics with certain close relatives. Especially my hardcore left-liberal mother who keeps on with the position that Obama is just a great guy and that without Obamacare she may die. It becomes very frustrating to discuss it with her because most of her arguments are very emotional and when I try to ask questions and brin g up some more logical elements she jsut shuts off entierly. I feel like if I press on further i'd upset her and I odn't want to do that. She's my mom you know? So does anybody else have this issue?

Welcome to the club.

I come from a family that is primarily leftist and some of them even admit to being full blown socialists. It can be very difficult to talk to them about these things, and sometimes it is better not to. That being said, if they bring something up, then by all means, don't hold back. While you don't want to intentionally upset your mother, sometimes the truth hurts and it is better that you maintain your principles than simply go along with what they're saying to avoid rustling jimmies.

I Have been wanting to show her some of the vids on the issue done by a few of our regulars. Havn't found the time. I feel Shane or Hawkeye could explain  the issues better then I could.

You clould be an ass and use emotional arguments as well. Ask here how she feels about the drone attacks, for example.
