Can anyone point me towards studies of the safety of GMOs?
Anytime I look for the information, I get swamped by by Natural News' shit.

well, considering that most domesticated plants and animals over the last 11,000 years is essentially of the Genetically modified variety, I would say that you don't even need a paper.

I've tried that always get the, "They're totally different." argument.

Ask them to state precisely what they think is different, and demonstrate that they're wrong in every claim they make. It's tedious, but it will tend to work on those not totally convinced of their religion.

in what way? that we now obtain a specific need in a few years, instead of a few generations? I don't see how that works, because frankly, that is just about the only real difference between the GMO of this day and age, and that from the neolithic.
as evensgrey said, try to have them state where it is generally different.

They never say why. I think its a form of technophobia. Like with vaccines.
The backlash against GMO's is the early 21st century's Luddite movement. Its sad but true.

Just looked the Luddite movement up. Holy crap, you're right. I just hope they don't get violent.

Too lat,e they already did. And, being the kind they are, European politicians took the opportunity to cave in and increase regulations.

Why I'm I not surprised?

I like pointing out to them that if you combine the radioactive output of the nuclear disasters, Chernobyl (15 tons), Fukushima (5 tons), and Three Mile Island (zilch, but if you don't include it they get pissy), a total of 20 tons over all time, it doesn't even reach HALF of the amount of radioactive material a perfectly-functioning coal plant routinely spews out in a year (50 tons, in addition to CO2, CO, NO, and other nasty stuff). They really HATE it when you do that!

To which they usually seem to respond that, "Well this is why we need to get rid of fossil fuels AND nuclear energy! We should have only renewable energy, like solar, wind, tidal, geothermal" etc, etc, all the while ignoring that those are all not much better in terms of safety, as cracked.com as already covered.
