Methinks he wasn't the anti-slavery, freedom loving, years ahead of his time angel he's depicted as in history class.
"When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world—'No. You move.'"
-Captain America, Amazing Spider-Man 537

Personaly I'm always for a good war as long as I get to be the guy who sits hundreds or even thousand of miles away from the front line and behind a desk ordering other people to their deaths.

I've always thought Lincoln was overrated. He didn't give two shits about slavery at all and only wanted to the Union to stick together no matter which side of the debate won. Hell, even the Emancipation Proclamation didn't free all the slaves. It only applied to Confederate states. Kansas was a state that still had perfectly legal slavery, simply because they didn't want to leave the Union.

And even then, it didn't apply to the parts of those states that were under Union control. So, he "freed" the slaves everywhere he couldn't, and didn't free them everywhere he could.

Exactly. The Emancipation Proclamation wasn't some freedom filled document based on some moral high ground. It was merely a way to cripple the economy of the "enemy."

That should be, "...didn't free them ANYwhere he could."
