Girl Genius the free

You know this webcomic I'm reading, name in the title if you're interested, started out as a paper bound comic that you only could pick up in your regular olde comic shoppe with satisfactory sales which could've been better with more exposure and advertisement.
That all changed when the Foglios decided to offer up the comic to read for free alongside still offering their comic books up for sale. Their sales and profits skyrocketed.
Now aside from making another cheap plug for something I personaly like and want to impose on you, I just wanted to know if I could actually use this as a good model for...something... working on a voluntary basis... alright, alright it's just a cheap plug.

If it's a cheap plug, where's the link?

And might that be Phil Foglio? I love his stuff.
