"Religion/Jesus set the standard of morality"

Maybe I'm biting off more than I can chew on this but it's something I'd like to see ended.  I've brought up the fact that this suggests humanity had no morality before Jesus or more after him (centuries of crusades, witch hunts and other horrors beg to differ).  I also asked for the explanation as to why societies that have never heard of Jesus and have little to no real organized religion still managed to arrived at the conclusion that murder is wrong.

What are other good arguments that morality is something we created ourselves?
I recently heard that the word heretic is derived from the greek work heriticos which means "able to choose"
