I'm pretty sure the Republicans were never anywhere near this bad when Obama got elected/re-elected.

I certainly don't recall any riots against Obama.  There were a few people who said he wasn't their President (and it was rather prominent from military personnel, perhaps realizing just how many more wars he was going to start than Bush did).

It's unclear how fair it actually was, although the outcome we got is probably about the best and fairest we could hope for.  It seems unlikely that the Republicans actively tried to cheat, as the Democrats were revealed to be at least prepared and practiced to do, in both Primaries and the General Election.

Incidentally, Trump has already said he wants to do something that will cut CO2 emissions:  Approve Keystone-Excel.  The oil piped through it will have a high carbon footprint compared to West-Texas crude, but smaller than the Venezuelan oil it will displace from the US market.
