One of the claims made by the 'No' campaign in the Scottish referendum was that Scotland wouldn't be able to keep using the British Pound after independence.  The Canadian government investigated the requirements to prevent an independent Quebec from continuing to use the Canadian Dollar in the run up to the last Quebec independence referendum (almost 20 years ago, now).

The conclusion was that while it was technically possible, it wouldn't be feasible.  It would require doing things like prohibiting the use of credit cards to make foreign transactions, and essentially require that the currency be prevented from leaving the country.  For Canada, which has a currency that isn't a major one in world financial markets, this would be possible, but extremely unpleasant for everyone here.  For the UK, which has one of the major world currencies, and hosts one of the world's major financial hubs, it would be catastrophic.
