It's often the question overlooked in a revolution: what will the shape of the new country be once the old regime is toppled? The trend now seems to be to set up a democracy and hope for the best. As if it's impossible for a majority of the people to want bad things.

yeah, we found out in the Arab world first hand, with the elections that came about from the Arab spring: it's literally a coin toss: Tunisia elected a pretty liberal guy (by Arab standards anyways), the Egyptians went for a center-right Islamist party (well, it's officially so). the latter is no longer in office.

When that happened, my first thought was "Is the Egyptian military trying to emulate the Turkish military?" My second was "Is what either of them do when this happens a good idea?"

No shit!

@ skm1091: yeah, that's what I'm suspecting. I mean you heard what that red asshole said at the end, right? "Zimbabwe is doing fine". yeah, that is scary.

If South Africa is to be prosperous nation once again they should look to African nations like Botswana or Mauritius. Botswana is the freest economy on the African Mainland and is most prosperous out all the mainland countries. Mauritius is the freest of all the African economies (including the islands) and the most prosperous.

The thing is though, the idea of the free market doesn't seem to appeal to most sub-saharan people--on top of their messed up politics (which frankly make the Near East look like Switzerland): they're poor, and being poor, easily tempted by the lies of Communism and Socialism, as a rabbit is tempted by a ferret's dance. On top of that, many of their societies have always been top-down ones (for example the Zulus, the Sauna's (great Zimbabwe fame), Benin, etc.), so there's already the precedent for a centralized state--even ones remembered as golden ages. like gas to a match this combination is.

Botswana and Mauritius prove they can implement a free market successfully (especially considering the obstacle course that is Africa). the question is now how to convince the masses of this in South Africa of this: it's hard enough convincing Europeans or Americans of this. Knowing people are all fundamentally the same, we can see how this will work out over there.
