Expecting the Worst

There is a saying that if you expect the worst you will never be disappointed. I don't think this is quite accurate, there will always be disappointment. I think a more accurate phrase would be, expect the worst and the disappointment will be little more bearable.

Opinions?

I forget the word for it, but this is one of those statements that are rendered useless because they cannot be untrue. Wait... I mean the opposite of one of those, I think... Anyway,

If you expect the worst, and the worst happens, you're disappointed it didn't go better.

If you expect the worst, and the best happens, you're disappointed it didn't go worse.

If you expect the worst, and something in the middle happens, you're disappointed you didn't get everything.

Expect the worst and you'll strive no higher than that.  It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.
I recently heard that the word heretic is derived from the greek work heriticos which means "able to choose"
