Dunno, they all seem the same militant-religious BS to me.

If Australia had made Waltzing Matilda their anthem, I'd post that.

i recall somebody did try to make that the Australian National Anthem some years back.  Mot of the usual suspects thought it was too silly, or to impertinent, or something.

The tune, at least, got used for one of the main anthems of Science Fiction Fandom, though.

Yes, it was between that, Song of Australia, and Advance Australia Fair (which became the anthem).

Because it actually reflected the culture of the common folk, and wasn't a hymn to worship the state.

Before then, it was (and still is) often used as an unofficial anthem.

I like the South African anthem because it has more than one language.

That anthem has five languages in it. Xhosa, Zulu, Sesotho, Afrikaans, and English

The Afrikaans was taken from the apartheid era anthem. Did ya know that?

I never thought that I would like the Irish anthem. I have to admit it if you look at the lyrics it's pretty cool.

well, like that imam said: a country--especially its rulers--shouldn't require a catchy anthem to like them....as you can tell, I just see *most* anthems as mere propaganda for the perpetuation of often corrupt states.

Waltzing Matilda though is an exception.
Meh

The purpose of an anthem, Ibrahim is to make people feel love for the country/rulers.

Well, make up your mind: the country or the rulers?

Skm1091, you do realize this is a forum of libertarians (and ancaps) the vast majority of which are atheists, right?  That deals with all things bogus--like creationism, theist apologetics, state cult apologetics, etc?
I thought we were supposed to hate state hymn worship songs, violence/beating people and sending others to hell...What is the point of these threads of yours?

Actually, I don't need to make up my mind because it can be either and/or both depending on which anthem it is.

For example : The U.k.'s  national anthem is clearly about the ruler
The U.S.'s anthem is clearly about the country (or more specifically it's military prowess)
The former Soviet Union's national anthem is about the revolution (which could be taken either way)
                     Canada's is about the country.

You don't have to like them for the message. You can like them for the melody, I like them because it can tell a lot about the people who wrote them and history of the nation. Out of all of them I gotta like the Irish the best. Because it is the most freedom oriented anthem of them all and we all know that Ireland does have a history of anarchy and statelessness in the past. Second is Romanian because it too was also written by people who wanted to be free, from another group of rulers, the Austrians to be exact, although I have to admit it can work on a few areas. But then again this was also written in a different era.

If you want the melody, you can go with Anacreon in Heaven for starters: It's the original song the Star-Spangled Banner used the tune of. And it's more entertaining--it's a drinking song (and unlike the anthem, I memorized it):
Oh Anacreon in Heaven
Where he sat in Full glee
A few sons of Harmony sent a petition
that he their inspirer and patron would be
when this Answer arrived, from the Jolly old Grecian
Voice Fiddle and Flute, no longer be mute!
I'll lend you my name, and inspire you to boot!
And besides I'll instruct you like me to entwine,
the Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus' vine"
Meh

The country that makes John Barry's "Born Free" as their anthem wins my heart:

Born free, as free as the wind blows
As free as the grass grows
Born free to follow your heart

Live free and beauty surrounds you
The world still astounds you
Each time you look at a star

Stay free where no walls divide you
You're free as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide

Born free and life is worth living
But only worth living
'Cause you're born free

Stay free, where no walls divide you
You're free as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide

Born free and life is worth living
But only worth living
'Cause you're born free

Well, in terms of the melody, the USSR had a quite good one.
