Yeah, you're reading it right: tampons were being confiscated...and diabetes supplies.

Well that's actually pretty sensible. I mean the diabetes medication could be used to disolute the senators sugarcoating the issue.
As for the tampons, I guess they're just afraid they could be forcefully inserted into their urethra.
