This Week's Quote: "I sure as hell wouldn't want to live in a society where the only people allowed guns are the police and the military." —William S. Burroughs

People love to use that "a few bad apples" excuse with regards to cops power tripping.

The thing is, maybe...MAYBE I could accept that argument if it weren't for one itty bitty but ever-so-crucial, little tiny detail.

THE ENTIRE POLICE FORCES KEEP BLOODY PROTECTING THEM!!

Last I checked, harboring criminals makes you an accomplice and thus just as guilty as the perp and the police damn well know that.  No excuses accepted.
I recently heard that the word heretic is derived from the greek work heriticos which means "able to choose"
The more you know...

Yep: harboring criminals, aiding and abetting, obstruction of justice, the police do it all. And they do things like, arrest people videoing them and brutalize or even terminate policemen who speak out against things like the War on Drugs.

I posted that story about the kindergartner on that other forum I go to and god damn. With "allies" like this, who needs enemies?

He thinks a jail cell is too cruel, which it is, but then says the following:

QuoteIf the kid was my student, I'd call the parents & request for permission to spank. If not, tell the parents what I'm doing until they arrive. If the parents cannot be reached, I'd do as I described here.

And if the kid didn't stop screaming, put tape over her mouth. As long as you explain every step to the child, as well as the solution (stop behaving so badly, and we'll let you go), I'm not opposed.

Nothing pisses me off more than police brutality

I've noticed that police misconduct stories are a semi-regular feature on this podcast, which leads me to the following question: Are the police really that bad in the United States?

If the police did something similar to those stories here in New Zealand, there would be news and debates regarding it for months!

And it looks like two of the Fresno Cops will stand trial.

oh, the stuff Shane's mentioned is but the milder stuff.

I mean, they did shoot a 90-something year old woman on a drug bust, planted drugs on her, and claimed she was a drug dealer. and the witness they cite recanted, citing that he had been coerced.

it's on episode 4 of bogosity.

and even I had some near misses: I had two cops pull a gun on me when I went to reach my ID while I was in Lake Jackson. the conversation went like this (not exact--it's been four years, and it's not the most memorable thing I've had happen.):

[spoiler]pigs: "Police, show me your ID!"

me: "ok, hold up, let me grab the wallet.".

*as I reach for my pocket, the Cops pull out their guns*

police: "get your hands up!"

*raises hands up, then says*: "ok, they're up--I just wanted to get my ID".

police: "keep your hands up!"

me: "I am! so what's wrong?"

police to other police: "search his pocket", he then radios some dude: "we have a suspect"

me: "like I said, it's just a wallet..what's this ab...."

police points gun at me again, saying: "hands up! shut up and keep your hands up!"

*other guy reaches me, gun still pointed at me. pulls out guess what? a wallet. also a handkerchief and a couple pennies.*

me: see? let me show you my ID.

at that moment, the cops showed some sense, and just let me have it. they did say this: "could you empty it and show me what's inside?"

*I do it. they notice the debit card. it's my mom's*

cops: what are you doing with it?

me: I'm running an errand to Krogers--I was getting her a gift card (it was for her birthday). it's my mom's.

*shows them my ID (it's a college ID--got my face on it). they notice that both have "Zallum" as a surname*

cops: "Ok, so why were you here?"

me: as I said, I was trying to get her a gift card. can I just get an answer about what this is about?

cops: "you didn't answer..what are you doing near these warehouses?"

me (annoyed): as I said--it's just a trip to get a gift card. I come from the apartments over there, and I have to go here to get to Krogers. can you tell me what this is about?

cops (finally): there've been a series of break-ins in the local warehouses recently. we have a suspect described as being on foot, wearing jeans and a jacket (N.B. let that sink in. I wish I was making this up). where were you last night?

me: I was at home.

it went from there, minus the guns, which by that point they'd holstered. basically, they let me go, but they had held me up for so long that the store was closed (don't know why--it's supposedly 24/7), so I came back without the gift card :(

Deyamn... and people sometimes wonder why I'm in favour of completely eliminating government all together...

To think that I though that it was controversial enough that police over here were given Tasers (Only the Armed Offenders Squad carries live ammunition weapons over here).
