Capcom Wants Your Help To Ban Street Fighter X Tekken Hackers

Originally, hackers have become brazen enough to want to expose the on-disc DLC for Street Fighter X Tekken to as many people as possible to prove that they are, in fact, 100% complete. They recently released a guide showing how Xbox 360 owners can make the most out of the 12 disc-locked characters, thus wanting to show the community that these characters are entirely accessible right out of the box with the right tools. The hackers know that eventually they will be banned but they're helping spread the word to consumers who didn't know about the disc-locked content in Street Fighter X Tekken...the Robin Hoods of interactive entertainment, no less.

Well, Capcom isn't having any of that. Senior Vice President Christian Svensson took to Capcom Unity forums to address the situation personally, asking for your help as they work with Microsoft to ban the offenders, saying...

I suppose the funny thing about it is that a company wants consumers to help them catch a group of people who accessed information that they want consumers to pay more money for, even though it's completed content that's already stored on the disc. Hackers are trying to inform consumers, and Capcom wants consumers to help catch the hackers. Very interesting.

For the most part it all boils down to gamers, once again, as to whether or not they are willing to help do the right thing, depending on what the right thing is. If this were Mass Effect you'd either have to make the choice of being a Paragon and turning in the hackers to Capcom (if or when you encounter them) or as a Renegade and allow the hackers to continue to spread the word to unsuspecting consumers about the disc-locked content. The consequences of this scenario are entirely in your hands. Time to put those Mass Effect decision-making skills to use. Get to it gamers, the galaxy...er...the industry is in your hands!

So Capcom wants us to help them ban the people who warn us that Capcom is screwing us by making us pay extra for content that is already complete and on the disc. Yeah, I'll help those crooks out alright.

The big negatives of this generation has been the abuse of DLC and patches. This isn't the first time Capcom has done this. They did the same thing with multiplayer for RE5. It seems like the new standard for alot of games is "Ok, let's ship 80% done and the rest we can patch and DLC"

They did this with Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Street Fighter iV (though only alternate costumes). Capcom are notorious for wanting us to pay extra for content that is already programmed into the disc.

Also, Angry Joe had a pretty good rant on Capcom's shenanigans.

The worst part of that, in my opinion, is the fact that the abuse of DLC by Capcom and such is being used to demonize DLC and patches as a whole. Patches are a good way to fix mistakes you may not have caught in bug testing, and gives you more freedom to release a game sooner rather than later. I imagine that we'd be waiting a month or two longer for ME3 if the developers knew that they wouldn't be able to patch bugs after release. It's also a way to control costs for both the producer and the consumer. "The game with all of its bells & whistles sells for $80? But I don't want to pay $80. Oh, wait! I can get it without these two characters/levels I have no interest in and reduce the price by $20. That works!" Then there's the ability to add onto the story of a game without developing a completely separate game (Think Mass Effect 2's "Arrival" DLC). I still remember the outrage over ME3's day one DLC. Oddly enough, the DLC was originally intended to be an exclusive for the collector's edition, but this was later changed so that the extra character/mission/weapon/etc could be purchased on XBL/BSN. It makes me wonder if actions taken by those like Capcom might end up hampering developers as a whole in the future.
