Do any of you guys have any opinions of the profession? I am asking this, because i've been visiting a psychiatrist for the last 3 months and i recently got hooked on this guy:

He has a bunch of videos on psychology and his talk about the way psychology works by popular opinion and how it isn't really a science have made me very skeptical of my current therapy. Of course, I realize that psychology and psychiatry are two different things, but nevertheless, i developed this irrational skepticism towards psychiatry. I say irrational, because i haven't really researched it much and I am being very paranoid at the moment.

So can anyone put some rational skepticism in to this?

A book that really informed me, not so much on the theory, but the application of psychiatry is a book called Better Than Well: American Medicine Meets the American Dream. Though It mainly focuses on quote/unquote "enhancement technologies" regarding the field of medicine, It has major sections focused on psychiatry and its applications. An excellent read, in my opinion  :)

As for how I view the field itself (influenced by the above book...and some research I did when I was a sociologist): It all comes down to how it is applied. As such, I'm heavily critical of when it is misapplied, or applied on the basis of bias and/or personal agenda. That said, I do believe it has a place...but shouldn't be the be-all and end-all of dealing with psychological issues.
