Unschooling and home schooling compared to public schooling

I know I have read repeatedly that unschooling and home schooling have been blowing public schooling out of the water with regards to results these days but I cannot remember where.

Anyone know a good source that has studied this in detail?  A fellow libertarian wanted to get the details.

I remember reading a Reason.com article about a study concerning the comparison, although said study showed that 'unschooling' actually performed worse than government schools (IIRC). I'll try to look for it later.
