Australia: US Copyright Colony or Just a Good Friend?

I came across this article the other day (I believe that it is a little verbose to quote here). Still it's a very good read on how america treats its "allies":

This may be old news to some, but being a New Zealander directly exposed to what Australia is like, I find it quite odd. Why? Because to most of us over here, Australia always seemed like it was so sure of itself, not bowing down to pressure from anyone...and yet, like with the New Zealand government (and many others), it too bows down to it's american (and occasionally chinese) masters.

I know that foreign policy isn't a major theme in the upcoming elections, being overshadowed by the economy and the slow descent into soft authoritarianism (among other things), but does america's soft imperialism factor much into how most americans view their government? Or does everyone see it as just a given, just part of the "great game" it 'has' to play in order to function on the international stage?

the fact that foreign policy is not a major issue, and that the broader public does not seem able to correlate it to the woes of domestic life these days, should be sufficient to indicate the typical American's attitude: they put little thought into it.
