News of the Bogus:
Biggest Bogon Emitter: Barack Obama (again!) http://news.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/12/obamas-teddy-roosevelt-speech---full-transcript.php
Idiot Extraordinaire: Rick Perry http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PAJNntoRgA

This Week's Quote: “The fact that religions can be so shamelessly dishonest, so contemptuous of the intelligence of their adherents, and still flourish does not speak very well for the tough-mindedness of the believers. But it does indicate, if a demonstration was needed, that near the core of the religious experience is something remarkably resistant to rational inquiry.” —Carl Sagan

All I can say is "Wow," in regards to that Biggest Bogon Emitter segment...

It really was as infuriating as a creationist video.

I find myself asking the question of who I dislike more between the two and I find that I dislike statists more. Creationists curse me with punishment from an invisible being while statists curse me with a group of very real people. Not only that, but I find statists tend to get a free pass by people who would be considered quite intelligent any other time.

Of course I don't know of too many creationists that I wouldn't consider statists.

This is true, but of course I'm primarily talking about the "statheists."

I wrote up a little MST3K for that Rick Perry ad on facebook a few days ago:

"I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm a Christian,"

You should be, or at least ashamed to admit you're Rick Perry.

"but you don't need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there's something wrong in this country"

That's right. Just one look at Perry gives you all you need to know about what's wrong with this country without spending precious Sunday mornings observing the problem first-hand.

"when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can't openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school."

Dat's right, Komrade. We burn the churches, hang anyone who prays while on school grounds, and crucify anyone who celebrates Christmas. Because we're godless communists, and that's what we do.

Last I checked, kids were still allowed to pray and celebrate Christmas on their own time. The difference has been that such prayer and celebration of Christmas is no longer a mandatory requirement for the crappy school system we're all forced to pay into. How this translates to a ban on prayer and Christmas, I don't know.

"As President, I'll end Obama's war on religion."

Replace 'religion' with 'terror', then we'll talk.

"And I'll fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage."

Why don't you focus on fighting liberal attacks on our economy? I mean, for one thing, that one's ACTUALLY HAPPENING. Then again, I guess the wars that you have in your head are more interesting than the ones you encounter in real life.

"Faith made America strong."

Because when I think "Strong Countries", I think the Salem witch trials and the inquisition. Oh, I'm sorry. Your words for that are 'Salem gourmet barbeque' and 'tough love for heretics', right?

"It can make her strong again."

Freedom from persecution and freedom of trade is what made the country strong, not your voodoo cult. Barry Goldwater is spinning in his goddamned grave.

"I'm Rick Perry and I approve this message."

And just when you thought he couldn't say anything more damaging to his campaign...

I have GOT to get you to co-host the podcast sometime!

"I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm a Christian." What an utterly meaningless and asinine phrase. You could replace the word "Christian" with nearly anything, and it still would make sense in the context of what he is saying  :P

Also, with regards to Obama's Roosevelt speech, I've noticed that Teddy Roosevelt is considered something of a very well appreciated president within american culture (at least, american internet culture). I'm wondering if those people whom hold him in high esteem realise the negative things he believed and supposedly did (sorry, being a foreigner means that I'm not that well versed in turn-of-the-century american presidents), or, like Obama, they just view things through rose coloured glasses; Invoking the historian's fallacy.

Do this: read up on all of the horrible tyrannies committed by Abraham Lincoln against northerners who were against the war, including shutting down newspapers and even jailing editors for publishing articles critical of the war, or using the military to put down war protests. Really, the guy was FAR worse than George W. Bush! Then go to pretty much any internet forum--even skeptic forums--and start a discussion on it. You'll see the Lincoln-worshipers come out in droves, flaming you, abusing you, attacking you from every angle, in fact, doing everything EXCEPT refuting the facts you presented.

It's a religion, and people like Lincoln and both Roosevelts are their prophets.

I don't even think it is an internet thing. Lincoln and the Roosevelts are almost always in the Top 5 of any "Best" Presidents poll.

Not mine, but then, that thread mysteriously vanished from the Randi forum after several Lincoln-worshipers got their asses handed to them...

(Funny thing: Firefox's spell checker knows the term Lincoln-worshiper!)

"Lincoln idolatry is, of course, the defining characteristic of a Straussian Neocon Warmonger like [Alan] Keyes, for The Legend of Father Abraham is what 'justifies' the American empire and its expansion." --Thomas DiLorenzo

I know, right?  It reminds me of how the left seems to think that not forcing people to pay for stem cell research translates to a ban on stem cell research.

If I'm still alive after finals, we'll see. I don't exactly have a good mic I can use at the moment. :-P

If only I could just assume that the world was full of idiots. Problem is that this isn't any more comforting...
