That was what the US government told people to do in the event of a hijacking (until about 10 years ago, that is).  If you tried to tell people to do that TODAY, they'd laugh at you (at BEST, and probably slug you if you tried to tell people to do that DURING a hijacking).  Attempts at hijacking in the last decade have generally resulted in hijackers beaten to a pulp and tied up with whatever is at hand.

Of course, what's been demonstrated is that the best response (in terms of minimum rate of injury and death of intended victim) is to prepare to use the deadliest thing you have to hand on the assailant.  You tend to get one of two responses:  They run away (almost always, they're looking for an EASY target, after all, that's why some started targeting people leaving the airports in rental cars in Florida after the shall-issue CCW permit law came into effect), or they attack you.  If they attack you under those circumstances, they were almost certainly going to attack you regardless.  Being prepared to counterattack makes some of them run, and stops others before they can hurt you.  (Best mugging resistance story EVER is what happened to woman named Trudy, famed in song and story.  You can hear the song at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1TTLtxzNTU.)
